Abstract

This IDC Survey examines how enterprises are preparing for a new chapter of the digital business era: AI everywhere. The dramatic increase in awareness of generative AI (GenAI) in early 2023 triggered the dawn of this new chapter. In the second half of 2023, they began to develop investment plans and identify priorities for 20224 and beyond. Despite the hype, most enterprises are still considering use cases, struggling to understand the implications for data control/use rather than directly investing in GenAI models and solutions. Most plan to start investing in 2024.

Large enterprises (with >5,000 employees) are more concerned that GenAI is significantly disrupting their business, and 2024 is about getting access to the right infrastructure for model building. In 2025, the focus shifts to AI platforms for enterprisewide control of data and AI services.

This deep-dive document provides key findings from IDC's global GenAI Awareness, Readiness, and Commitment (ARC) Survey of 1,363 respondents in North America, Asia/Pacific, and EMEA conducted in August 2023 as well as two Future Enterprise Resiliency and Spending Surveys of 880+ respondents in the same regions (Waves 7 and 8). All were conducted at a time when IT leaders were deeply engaged in accessing the implications of GenAI for their organizations, establishing the preparedness of their IT systems/staff, and working on their road maps for 2024 and beyond.
