IDC Predicts: By 2026, 60% of Asia Pacific* Organizations Will Build Applications Using Open-Source AI Foundation Models to Drive Innovation, Sovereignty, and Cost Efficiency

SINGAPORE, 12 February 2025 – In the report, IDC FutureScape: Worldwide Developer and DevOps 2025 Predictions — Asia/Pacific (Excluding Japan) (APEJ) Implications, IDC predicts that by 2026, the need for faster access to innovation, operational sovereignty, transparency, and lower costs will drive 60% of organizations in APEJ to develop applications with open-source AI foundation models. Open-source models are also enabling organizations to address development skill shortages. The IDC AP Software Survey 2024 found that 41% of Asia/Pacific organizations have launched open-source initiatives, leveraging community support to accelerate solutions.

“Today, we are witnessing significant technological advancements, especially in AI and automation, impacting organizational practices across industries. Over the next five years, we are set to expect a major change as technological breakthroughs transform software delivery, making it more efficient and AI-focused,” says Dhiraj Badgujar, senior research manager for xOps, Software Development, and AI Developer Strategies at IDC Asia/Pacific.

By 2027, IDC predicts that 60% of net-new applications that leverage generative AI capabilities will be developed by low-code or no-code developer technologies. The democratization of development through low-code/no-code platforms, open-source AI models, and natural language-based development will enable businesses to innovate faster, reduce costs, and adapt to market demands. But with this change comes the need for new rules for how to run AI-powered tools like AI copilots, AI assistants, and AI agents, which are becoming important parts of workflows and need to be managed well. IDC forecasts that, by 2027, 50% of enterprises in APEJ will require technologies to manage the proliferation of GenAI copilots and digital assistants.

IDC’s predictions delve into the top forecasts and APEJ implications for developers and development operations (DevOps) in 2025 and beyond. Other predictions are highlighted below:

AI-Assisted Security Patching and Remediation: By 2027, 70% of corrective code fixes for application security issues will be generated by AI-assisted automated remediation tools, reducing the time to patch software vulnerability down to days.

Convergence of MLOps and DevOps: By 2028, 55% of organizations will use DevOps tools that combine MLOps, LLMOps, DataOps, CloudOps, and DevOps capabilities to optimize the route to AI value in software delivery processes.

GenAI to Create Most Software Tests: By 2029, GenAI-based software testing tools, capable of writing 80% of tests, will be augmented by AI agents and agentic workflows, improving code coverage and quality, but demanding governance.

IDC expects that organizations will increasingly depend on generative AI (GenAI) to improve everything from DevOps pipelines and cost management to application security and testing, significantly decreasing human involvement and time spent on repetitive tasks.

“The newer tools that leverage AI have become industry standard for the entire software development lifecycle,” adds Badgujar. “GenAI presents new opportunities and challenges, but developers and DevOps experts must understand the strengths and shortcomings of the developing technologies to capitalize on opportunities. Natural language interfaces, agents, and assistants in developer tools could simplify communication for developers in the regions, enhancing modernization trends and promoting cost savings. Growth and keeping a competitive edge can be achieved through a holistic approach that includes building capabilities, implementing strategies, and measuring impacts regularly.”
