Indonesia’s Smartphone Market Year-over-Year Growth in 2024 is Driven by Ultra Low-End Segment and Affordable 5G Offerings
JAKARTA, 11 February 2025 — Indonesia’s smartphone market grew by 15.5% YoY to nearly 40 million units in 2024, according to the International Data Corporation (IDC) Worldwide Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker. Vendors were able to grow strongly in the first half of 2024 after multiple quarters of decline in the previous years.
In 4Q24, Indonesia’s smartphone market grew by 9.6% year-over-year and was rather stagnant at -0.2% quarter-over-quarter (QoQ). While vendors were expecting to ride off the wave of the year-end double-date festivals, demand slowed down as consumers were more apprehensive amidst the current economic conditions.
In 2024, growth was mainly driven by the ultra low-end segment ( Shares of 5G increased significantly to 25.8% in 2024, from 17.1% in 2023. The increase was mainly driven by the new model releases and increasingly affordable 5G offerings in 2024. Shares of the 5G market were still led by Samsung, with OPPO closing the gap only towards the end of 2024. 5G ASP dropped 20.4% YoY, reaching US$441 in 2024. “While the market did see a recovery in 2024 after years of decline, it is still not out of the woods yet. Consumers continue to be anxious amid global political and economic uncertainty. Growth continues to be coming from supply side forces, while demand is still generally lackluster. Growth is expected to be in the lower single digits for 2025,” says Vanessa Aurelia, research analyst at IDC Indonesia.
